Camden in Bloom Best Business Garden 2016

The garden at Cecil Sharp House, a permaculture LAND project, and Permablitz London's showcase garden has won Best Business Garden for Camden in Bloom 2016. The judges praised the diversity of plants, the care of the soil, the creative application of agroforestry principles and the way that the garden involves a wide range people.

Kayode Olafimihan, who designed the garden, said "I'm delighted that we have won Camden in Bloom for the second time, and that all the hard work of garden volunteers and permablitzers has been recognised in this way"

Thanks to a series of permablitzes, the garden has become a permaculture LAND (Learning and Network Demonstration) project - a network of permaculture gardens, open to the public, that aim to show permaculture in action. The garden is regularly maintained by a group of volunteers - if you would like to join them email This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

Camden in Bloom Best Business Entrance 2014

The entrance garden of Cecil Sharp House won Camden in Bloom Best Business Entrance Award on Monday 8th September 2014 in a ceremony at Camden Town Hall.

Cecil Sharp House's Operations Director, Rosie Baker, said: “We are very pleased to be the winners of Camden in Bloom 2014 Best Business Entrance award.

We owe enormous thanks to our friends at London Permaculture without whom this would not have happened. The Permaculture team of volunteers led a ‘Permablitz’ on the entrance garden to Cecil Sharp House in March 2014 and transformed it completely beyond our expectations into a beautiful space with an abundance of wildlife, fragrance and colour.

They achieved all this with no budget but with hard work, dedication and generous donations of plants from the community. We are so grateful to all who contributed their time and plants and are thrilled to see this stunning entrance garden welcome our visitors to Cecil Sharp House.”

The judges gave high praise to the garden, with comments such as:

  • “This is an inspired project – highly original”
  • “Excellent concept, showing much imagination and beautiful results. Obviously much effort went into the design and creation of the site, and it was a rare example of “horticultural creativity” for such a small space. It is designed to be sustainable.”
  • “A good example of what can be achieved with a small budget, which should encourage other groups to get going along similar lines.”
  • “Eco-friendly in materials recycling, planting, and the methods used to maintain the site. Good involvement of a core group of volunteers and regular interchange of volunteers between this project and others. These network arrangements naturally lead to exchange of ideas and mutual support.”
  • “Great educational value. To give just 2 examples:-
    • - 75% of the plants grown are edible as well as being attractive
    • - The herb spiral is built with re-cycled bricks and displays some uncommon herbs as well as the usual ones”

On receiving the award, Kayode said: "Cecil Sharp House generously hosts the annual London Permaculture Festival. It's been a pleasure to contribute a permaculture entrance garden by way of a 'thank you."

The London Permaculture Festival (every July) offers a huge range of activities on permaculture, sustainable living and growing. With workshops from leading teachers and experts in the field, to music, plants, book, and clothing stalls, children's games and local organic food, the festival is a great introduction into permaculture and Cecil Sharp House is a fitting place for a demonstration permaculture garden.
