The cover feature in the Autumn 2015 issue of English Dance & Song magazine is the young folk band, The Dovetail Trio. Rosie Hood takes the lead in singing ‘The Two Magicians’ in the regular Singer, Song and Source series, with fellow trio members, Matt Quinn and Jamie Roberts providing the chorus and instrumental accompaniment. The song has only been collected once in England, by Cecil Sharp from Mr Sparkes, a blacksmith from Minehead in Somerset in 1904. In fact there were two Mr Sparkes who were blacksmiths in the town – brothers George and William – who worked in adjoining properties alongside their sons. The chorus, with the phrase ‘you coal black smith’, obviously appealed to the family. Sharp published the song in many of his publications and it became popular in schools. The Dovetail Trio have aimed for a simple and consistent sound, with concertina and guitar accompaniment, and either Rosie or Matt taking the lead vocals. Their first CD, Wing of Evening, was released this year
